On a weekend where KTM is expected to be strong, Vinales swooped in in the final minutes of the hour-long session to jump ahead of Ducati’s Pecco Bagnaia – with Vinales’ 1m44.634s just a tenth down on the record lap set by the currently-absent Jorge Martin last year.

Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez completed the top four close behind Bagnaia, both around a tenth and a half back from Vinales and both around a tenth and a half up on Fabio Quartararo – who had a truly eventful session.

Crashing at Materassi in the early going, Quartararo hit the ground with his left shoulder as he slid into the gravel – where he struggled to get up for a few moments.

He had suffered a shoulder dislocation, which was fixed there in the gravel trap, and as the pain wore off Quartararo found himself arguing emotively with the marshals over whether he could ride the bike back to the pitlane.

He was attended to by MotoGP’s chief doctor Angel Charte but was allowed to head back out there even as the pain seemed to return again – with Quartararo gritting his teeth to secure a Q2 spot in fifth place.

Quartararo was followed by Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi, Yamaha team-mate Alex Rins (who ran behind Alex Marquez during the latter’s fastest lap), KTM’s Pedro Acosta and the VR46 Ducati duo of Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio.

Advanced to Q2: Vinales, Bagnaia, M Marquez, A Marquez, Quartararo, Bezzecchi, Rins, Acosta, Morbidelli, Di Giannantonio

Will contest Q1: Oliveira, Bastianini, Miller, Fernandez, Aldeguer, Mir, Zarco, Binder, Ogura, Nakagami, Savadori, Chantra

Miguel Oliveira (Pramac Yamaha) and Enea Bastianini (Tech3 KTM) were 0.001s apart in 11th and 12th, in what was one of Oliveira’s most competitive showings as a Yamaha rider yet – though it wasn’t enough for a Q2 spot.

It was enough, however, to beat Pramac team-mate Jack Miller, whose session was hindered by a Bucine crash in which he, like Quartararo, took a big whack to his left shoulder.

There was only one Ducati absent from the top 10, with Fermin Aldeguer – who is not at 100% fitness following arm pump surgery – looking a bit off the pace.

But as for Honda, all four riders came nowhere near challenging for a Q2 spot, its day summed up by a late crash for struggling rookie Somkiat Chantra.
