Hamlin Doesn’t Miss A Beat With Pocono Pole
LONG POND, Pa. — After a week away from the NASCAR Cup Series for the birth of his son, Denny Hamlin didn’t miss a step Saturday afternoon at Pocono Raceway.
Hamlin won the pole for The Great American Getaway 400 at the 2.5-mil triangular track.
Driving the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, Hamlin turned a lap of 52.144 seconds at 172.599 mph.
It was Hamlin’s first pole of the season and his fifth at Pocono, where he has visited victory lane on seven occasions. It was also the 42nd pole of his career.
Chris Buescher qualified second with a lap of 52.227 in his RFK Racing Ford.
Carson Hocevar grabbed the third spot in his Spire Motorsports Chevrolet, while John Hunter Nemechek was fourth in a Legacy Motor Club Toyota.
Fifth went to Cole Custer in a Haas Factory Team Ford.
Toyota drivers Chase Briscoe, Ty Gibbs, Tyler Reddick and Christopher Bell filled the sixth through ninth positions. Daniel Suarez was 10th in a Chevrolet.
Point leader William Byron crashed his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet on his qualifying lap.
