Familiar Winners In Super Trofeo Action

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — A pair of entries doubled up while two new faces and entries added their names to the winner’s honor roll to complete the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America weekend at Watkins Glen Int’l.In both Pro and overall, TR3 Racing’s Will Bamber and Elias De La Torre secured their second win of the weekend and the season. Wayne Taylor Racing’s duo of Glenn McGee and Graham Doyle won their fifth of six Am class races this season. Newcomers to victory lane included ANSA Motorsports’ Nicky Hays and Antoine Comeau in ProAm, and RAFA Racing’s Rocky T. Bolduc in LB Cup.
An early race caution put most of the second 50-minute race of the weekend under slow speed, with limited green-flag running before the pit stop window opened. De La Torre leapt out to a significant lead in the No. 29 TR3 Racing, Lamborghini Miami, Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo2 after the restart with the second-placed car having issues on the leap. After a smooth pit stop, Bamber controlled the remainder of the race to win by 7.936 seconds.
“For me it goes to teamwork, and this kid has a huge future with a great start and great restart,” said Bamber, who hailed De La Torre’s performance. “I just had to not lose focus. Awesome weekend. I’d actually worked as his engineer last year, and now we’re driving together. We’ll keep moving forward.”
Of note, their perfect points weekend coupled with either inconsistency or issues for their rivals have unofficially propelled them into the Pro class championship lead.
World Speed Motorsports’ Scott Huffaker and Jaden Conwright (No. 22 Huracán) and ANSA Motorsports’ Enzo Geraci and Colin Queen (No. 4 Huracán) completed the podium. For the first time this season, Wayne Taylor Racing didn’t have a car on the Pro class podium.
ANSA’s fortunes improved even more so in ProAm, courtesy of a bold and decisive move from Nicky Hays in the waning moments.
Hays, driving the No. 30 ANSA Motorsports, Lamborghini Orlando, Huracán he shared with Antoine Comeau, dove down the inside of the leading No. 14 Flying Lizard Motorsports Huracán of Slade Stewart at Turn 8. The late-braking maneuver was executed to perfection with Hays able to win by 2.411 seconds.
“I knew he wasn’t going to make it easy, so I had to outsmart him,” Hays said. “I just went for it. We’re going for checkers or wreckers. We’re not here to finish second. We’re here to win.”
In their first race weekend with MLT Motorsports, the pairing of Darius Trinka and Tadas Karlinskas finished second in the No. 11 Huracán. TR3’s pair of Jason Hart and Conrad Geis in the No. 67 Huracán were third for their second podium of the weekend. The pink unicorn-liveried No. 14 car of Stewart and Andy Lee finished fourth after a setback, as contact from an Am class car at Turn 1 took them out of podium contention.
In Am, the top two finishers from Friday came home in the same positions on Saturday. Again, a clean drive from the pair of Doyle and McGee in their No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing, Lamborghini Palm Beach, Huracán netted the victory by 8.516 seconds.
“Perfect weekend for everyone on the 10 car,” said Doyle, who will also race in Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in the No. 45 Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Grand Touring Daytona (GTD) class. “Glenn had a mega start from P2 to pass for the lead right away. We had a long yellow, but then he handed me a perfect car to go from there.”
Jem Hepworth and Lindsay Brewer continued their strong form of late in the No. 2 RAFA Racing Huracán with their fourth podium in the last five races, and second straight runner-up result. Precision Performance Motorsports’ new pairing of Sebastian Carazo and Sean McAuliffe came home third in their No. 46 Huracán.
Scoring an emotional and popular first victory in LB Cup was Rocky T. Bolduc in the No. 99 RAFA Racing, Lamborghini Greenwich, Huracán. The Canadian driver made his debut at Watkins Glen International a year ago and adorned in a Bolduc Maple Farms-liveried entry, got to celebrate with his family and coach Corey Lewis in victory lane, overcome with joy after a bounce back race from a lost win Friday to win his class Saturday by 8.163 seconds.
“It’s the one-year anniversary of my debut,” Bolduc reflected. “Look at my beautiful family here, my wife, my kids, who came to support me. It was my first racing season. I’ve got no words. My wife says it best, ‘Every setback has a comeback!’”
Tom Capizzi (No. 49 Forte Racing Huracán) and Friday winner Mark Brummond (No. 52 Forty7 Motorsports Huracán) completed the LB Cup podium.
